<p><a href="http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1485990063&amp;sk=info" target="_blank">Joshua Goldman</a> of JG Athletics is learning the Hoop Core Program.</p>
<p>He is certified in Strength Training, Sports Performance, Active Isolated Stretching and Pre &amp; Post Rehabilitation.</p>
<p>He has  felt many benefits from using my collapsible hoop. Mostly he recognized that the <a href="http://www.bettyhoops.com" target="_self">Belly Pump</a> is a quick way to get his clients in shape. In the first 10 minutes, even a very fit coach is breaking a sweat and feeling the burn.</p>
<p>The most interesting thing we discovered while doing the Kidney Push- (the Belly Pump with focus on disengaging the ribcage from the lower back muscles) is that the Belly Pump is very similar to the spinal decompression table used in many chiropractors offices.</p>
<p>This table tilts up and down under the pelvis. The chiropractor will then hold certain low back muscles to increase traction (stretch, in that muscle) therefor releasing <a href="http://www.americanspinal.com/" target="_self">compression</a> in the spine.</p>
<p>These effects are exactly what people get when they achieve the Belly Pump. Many people have completely relieved their sciatic pain and low back pain in the first few weeks of practicing this method.</p>

<p>So hooping is now a trend. Everyone and their mother are &#8216;teaching&#8217; with hoops.</p>
<p>People are naming their classes as being Fitness and Holistic. I could tell you documentation of what is really going on in these programs with hoops but that would take a while.</p>
<p>I had an old and fat gym teacher in middle school. She would tell us how to do somersaults but couldn&#8217;t show us.                                   <em>i left discouraged in myself when management was to blame. NOT GOOD<br />
</em></p>
<p>I had an aerobics teacher at the Aspen Athletic Club. In 1991 she asked me to leave the step aerobics class because I guess I was endangering others and myself. The rockets like routine was too fast and hard to keep up with &#8211; all for the sake of fitness &#8211;                   <em>i left discouraged in myself when management was to blame. NOT GOOD</em></p>
<p>In 1994 I went to a yoga class. The teacher, Laura, adjusted everyone in the whole class. Her verbal cues were confusing at first. Breathe into your feet, lift your chest toward the sky.. I left class thinking &#8220;how the hell does one do that?!&#8221; I also left class feeling not just relaxed, stronger and taller, I left with better body awareness.</p>
<p>&#8230;and isnt that what movement classes are all about. First- teaching the student to understand their body, Then- guiding them in either organized and or freestyle movements.</p>
<p>I still get calls and emails each week from people who&#8217;ve attended other hoop trainings and classes. They are discouraged. I of course ask them the important questions like, what size and weight of hoop are you using &#8211; because we all know that you are ONLY as good as your gear. I ask if they could feel their core moving separately from their hips. They dont know what I mean .</p>
<p>HOOP BASICS:</p>
<p>Learn the Belly Pump. Learn to move isolate and then integrate the musculoskeltal system. In the hundreds of studies I;ve done, <a href="http://www.heavyhoop.com">most hoop teachers</a> do not even know how to pump from their core. Because of this, you can see the compression and hyperextension in their lower back and shoulders.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve trained many people who have been teaching with the hoop. I am overwhelmed each time that they tell me they NEVER &#8211; understood the common mistakes while hooping and never had used the right part of the body. And some of them are <a href="http://http://www.acefitness.org/" target="_self">A.C.E.</a> certified.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Hoop Off the Holiday Hips with the Betty Hoop &amp; The Quick Fire Method<br />
</strong></p>
<p>Many of you reading this blog own a hula hoop of some kind. I blog about the difference is hoop sizes and weights.You also probably have taken a hoop class or watched a dvd of some kind.</p>
<p>Below is some info on how to find the right hoop and workout for your <a href="http://http://www.lhj.com/health/weight-loss/getting-started/the-biggest-loser-7-day-diet-plan/" target="_blank">health and fitness goals</a>.</p>
<p>If you are an adult and weigh over 100 pounds, the best hoop is one that is between 1-2 pounds and about 4 feet diameter. <a href="http://www.bettyhoops.com/programs.html" target="_blank">The Betty Hoop</a> is a bit less than 2 pounds and 2 sizes in 1 to fit up to 240 pounds!</p>
<p>The information below is based on 10 years of study in exercise physiology, fitting sports equipment to athletes and hundreds of people commenting on successes and injury from using other hoop products and workout.</p>
<p><strong>Hoops over 2 Lbs:</strong> If its too heavy, it will bruise organs and pinch nerves.</p>
<p><strong>Hoops under 1 1/2 Lbs: </strong>If it is too light, like most of the hoops used for tricks ,it will not hold it&#8217;s momentum or weigh enough to really tone the core.</p>
<p><strong>Other Hoops &amp; Workouts: </strong>I get calls every week from discouraged people who buy hoop dvds and go to classes to find that the teacher mostly teaches tricks. They promote their product as being great for Chi, Weightloss and Yoga. Yet they mention nothing about using the body with proper alignment, core power or any contraindications. I even had a gal in my training 2 years ago who was <a href="http://http://www.acefitness.org/" target="_blank">ACE certified</a> and had NO body awareness let alone how to correct any one else. So even though people can be great<a href="http://www.hooping.org" target="_blank"> hoopers</a> and certified in <a href="http://www.yogajournal.com/" target="_blank">Yoga </a>or <a href="http://www.shape.com/?gclid=CPeEp5v-ga0CFQSFhwodwGurRg" target="_blank">Fitness</a>, I rarely find their instruction to be effective or correct when using the hoop. Many <a href="http://www.curves.com" target="_blank">Curves</a> in the U.S. even illegally use heavy hoops in their studios. (it is against the workout structure to bring hoops in. What is wrong though, is untrained Curves teachers using hoops from 2-8 pounds.)</p>
<p><strong>The Quick Fire Method: </strong>I designed this method by using moves from yoga alignment, chiropratic and extreme sports.                              The<strong> <em>Belly Pump</em></strong> is the simple most effective way to quickly lose weight, decrease back compression and tone the core. It is also the force that generates the hoops speed and angles, making hoop performance totally fluid and easy! ( I say this because a lot of hoopers out there think that my interested and experience are only in fitness. I actually perform and teach dozens of cool tricks as well.)</p>
<p><strong>Here is how to practice the Belly Pump:</strong></p>
<p>This is very similar to the Breath of fire in Kundalini Yoga. As the hoop pushes into your gut, tighten it up and push back into the hoop.  The Belly Pump teaches how to isolate the upper from the lower body and JUST USE the core. Picture arrows shooting straight from the core out into the hoop and back through your belly, toward your spine. There should be NO hyperextension or compression in the lower back.</p>
<p><strong>Common Mistakes &amp; Correction for Practicing the Belly Pump: </strong></p>
<p>1.) Pushing the whole body forward into the hoop &#8211; Don&#8217;t move the upper or lower body. Suck the belly in &amp; push it out into the hoop without moving the torso or legs. JUST try to use the core muscles.                                                                                                                                             **Many adults have limited range of motion and agility. They use their whole  body as 1 unit. This is what prevents isolation of the core muscles.</p>

<p>This past month we filmed at a sacred location in Snowmass, Colorado and inside Dance Progressions. My Quick Fire Method Method uses yoga alignment, powerful breathing techniques and sport training.  The Belly Pump is used to get people out of their lower back and deep into their core. Although people have lost 10 pounds and 4 inches off their waist in less than 1 month with my dvd, my passion is to share the mind body healing that can happen when moving with intention. 		<description><![CDATA[world hoop day is about hooping with the intention to heal yourself, others and the planet]]></description>

<p>Did you know that once a year, all the humpback whales bury their heads in the sand and sing the same song? How do they know when to do this? Why do they do this? This stirred up many thoughts about how we as people, are so disconnected from having one consciousness.</p>
<p>A yoga guru who I studied under years ago explained group prayer simply. He said that when 1 person prays, dances, meditates, it can raise their vibration to a more healing and strong one. When many people do this together, benefits are multiplied. When groups of people in different areas cast out the same healing intention, be it for themselves, others, the Earth, this raises the vibration of the planet. When I say vibration, I don’t mean to sound esoteric.</p>
<p>I simply mean that we can all align ourselves for the best things to happen in our lives and others! Just like the theory of <strong><a href="http://thesecret.tv/" target="_self">The Secret, </a><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Power-Now-Guide-Spiritual-Enlightenment/dp/1577311523" target="_self">The Power of Now</a> </strong>and<strong> <a href="http://www.abraham-hicks.com/lawofattractionsource/index.php" target="_self">The Laws of Attraction</a>. </strong></p>
<p>I moved to NYC one month after 9/11. My goal was to use the hoop as a healing tool for kids and adults. I developed the right sized hoop to fit people of all height, weight and ability. I fine tuned the program that I had been teaching since 1998. My program was based in <strong><a href="http://www.adta.org/Default.aspx?pageId=378213" target="_self">dance movement therapy</a>, <a href="http://www.iayt.org/" target="_self">therapeutic</a></strong><a href="http://www.iayt.org/" target="_self"> </a><strong><a href="http://www.iayt.org/" target="_self">yoga</a>. </strong>I taught my<strong> </strong>program through inner cities and schools. I taught it to firemen and policemen. The heavy energy that their body’s carried became lighter. The simple movement and breathing techniques awoke their senses. I documented how they started to smile and look happier and more present in their bodies. From then on, I look at the hoop and my program and the silent psychiatrist, where no words, analysis or drama or needed. Just fun movement with the intention to heal.</p>
<p>This same year, I started <strong><a href="http://www.bettyhoops.com/about.html" target="_self">Hoop for Peace Month</a>,</strong> similar to <a href="http://www.worldhoopday.org" target="_self"><strong>World Hoop Day</strong></a>. My vision was for people around the world to set aside 5 minutes out of their day for healing. I never was able to get enough publicity to get Hoop For Peace Month off the ground.</p>
<p>So on 11.11.11 when hundreds of other hoopers are standing around in parks practicing tricks, for <a href="http://www.worldhoopday.org" target="_self"><strong>World Hoop Day</strong></a>, I recommend to take 5 minutes with yourself or others and hoop with the intention to heal. Youc an teach someone how to hoop or just hoop on your own. Either way, I guarantee, that effort of intentional movement will be sent back to you 3 fold. So just make sure you have the right hula hoop! The<a href="http://www.heavyhoop.com" target="_self"> weighted hoops</a> will not work Anything over 2 pounds is dangerously too heavy. The <a href="http://www.acuhoop.com" target="_self">knobbed hoops</a> will hurt as well. Hoops from sporting good stores are too light and will not work either. Try the <a href="http://www.bettyhoops.com/products" target="_self">Betty Hoop</a>! That is designed for kids from 9 years old up to adults weighing 240 pounds.
